Preventing Your Stretch Marks

April 24, 2009

The idea of having stretch marks can get to anyone. Many people associate them with being pregnant, but stretch marks can also be induced by weightlifting, weight gain and sometimes puberty, things that causes the skin to stretch more quickly than it is able to naturally.

If you already have stretch marks you’re plausibly looking for a way to lighten stretch marks. While removing them completely is tough unless you have a surgical procedure, it is possible to reduce their appearance.

There are a variety of skin treatments that can help reduce the appearance, for instance micro dermabrasion or laser therapy. There are more invasive surgeries like a abdominoplasty, which is a bit more common after losing weight or giving birth. However there are treatments that are less invasive too, the most common of which is using something like Palmer’s cocoa butter. The main thing to remember when using a stretch mark cream is that the cream needs to be used every single day for a period of time in order to reduce their appearance.

The fear of developing stretch marks can be especially difficult during pregnancy because so many changes are already happing with the body. Gaining weight itself is tough for many women and there is always the stress of dropping off that weight rapidly after the pregnancy as well. But it is necessary to gain the appropriate amount of weight for the health of the baby. Women who don’t gain enough weight have a higher risk of having an underweight or premature baby. But gaining too many pounds can cause other health issues like varicose veins, backaches, and high blood pressure. Gaining too much weight can also cause a higher probability of creating stretch marks, and creating more difficulty losing the excess weight after the baby is born.

If you are concerned about developing stretch marks, whether during pregnancy or before beginning a weightlifting routine, your greatest defense is prevention. It’s best to think ahead and use a good stretch mark cream to prevent weightlifting stretch marks. Stopping them from developing is more effective than working to remove them after they have already appeared.
