As a person ages, it’s a normal thing that he memory loss kicks in, however this is not the only factor, stress, lack of sleep, and poor nutrition does play a role in having poor memory. Having a poor memory is annoying because you tend to leave behind important stuff and you become the butt of jokes. The next section lists down strategies that you can use in how to improve memory:
Eat proper meals and take plenty of healthful drinks to avoid dehydration. Include a lot of berries that have dark red and blue colored skins in your food intake. In an experiment aging rats were fed a diet high in blueberries, their memory loss reversed and they began growing new brain cells.
Also avoid drinking too much coffee and soft drinks because too much sugar in reality lessens the amount of glucose (the brain’s fuel) that the bloodstream carries to the brain which affects a person’s ability to recall past events. Plain water instead is always highly recommended.
Improve memory by creating an image of what you need to remember in your mind that is funny, scary, unusual, or colorful. Einstein was no doubt a great scientist but at the end of the day, he calls his wife to ask for directions to their house! This is because the brain easily remembers things that stand out while it forgets things that do not.
Mental exercise is just as important as physical exertion. An example of a good mental exercise is switching. Switching increase memory because it stimulates neurons. Also studies have shown that it also has the capacity to create new ones. To do this, simply “switch” your good hand to your weaker hand. If you have always brushed your teeth or written notes with your right hand, try doing this using your left hand. You can literally change your perspective. The world renowned author Dan Brown hangs himself upside down to stimulate his creative juices.
When you are studying for an important exam, visualize yourself at the examination venue writing what you’re studying as the answers to a set of imagined questions in the exam.
Stress interferes with a persons concentration, clear thinking, and the ability to form memories. To improve memory you have to reduce stress in your life by simplifying your schedule, learning to delegate tasks to others, learning and practicing meditation, and exercising regularly. Also enough sleep is important because as a person sleeps, the brain will be putting new information into his long term memory.
Learn how to breath deeply and from the diaphragm instead of breathing shallowly and slowly. The brain remembers things a lot better if a person breathes in a relaxed way.
Make a mental image of what you want to remember and associate it with something that makes it stand out. For example if you need to buy items for your son’s birthday party, visualize the items actually being used in the party by your son. To make the items stand out think of them in outrageous colors and sizes. For example: Your son wearing a tall party hat is eating yellow spaghetti on an orange party plate using a giant spoon and fork.
An important thing to consider is that these things are not a cure-all especially if the cause of memory decline is attributed to Alzheimer’s disease or other diseases that affect manifest symptoms of memory loss. These are just simple tips that the reader can do to address simple forgetfulness.
