The flexibility and strength of tubing made of high density polyethylene material and connected by PEX fittings offers many advantages over plumbing systems using metal or rigid plastic pipes. PEX tubes do not corrode and withstand cold temps without becoming brittle. They cost less than metal or pvc piping. There are a number of connection methods some of which are patented. But basically the fitting is placed either over or into the tube and a ring is crimped on to the tube or fittings. Rings can be made of plastic, copper or stainless steel. There are proprietary connection systems which require particular tools and fittings.

Tubes are cut employing a specific PEX pipe cutter and come in different sizes to accommodate 1/2″ or 3/4″ tubes. A main crimping tool is employed to pinch the rings over the pipe or fitting.
